Glider launched to study Lake Superior
University of Minnesota Professor Jay Austin visted Grand Marais on June 28, bringing with him an interesting piece of equipment. An autonomous underwater glider, which was launched into Lake Superior, from the schooner Hjordis.
The glider travels under water, periodically surfacing to send data via satellite to the Large Lakes Observatory in Duluth. Information gathered by the glider and by a number of UMD buoys can be found on the Large Lakes Observatory website.
Rhonda Silence joined Professor Austin and the Hjordis crew during the launching. Here's her report.
