A garden party at Cook County Community Center
There are several community gardens here in Grand Marais -- at the Grand Marais Recreation Area, at the WTIP station, and at the Cook County Community Center.
The garden at the Cook County Community Center, located above the center’s new skating warming house and below the Little League field, has been growing, not just vegetables, but garden beds!
The space started with raised beds made of lumber pallets, painted in bright colors by community youth. The garden grew this year with the addition of cinder block raised beds, which are thriving. And there are plans for even more raised beds next year.
The gardens are a cooperative effort of Cook County Extension, the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op, Cook County Community Center and the Northwoods Food Project. Helping care for the garden beds this summer were the children of the Cooperation Station.
There was a celebration for those little helpers at the newly expanded garden at the community center last week and WTIP’s Rhonda Silence joined the fun. Here’s her report.
