Foul odor revisits Highway 61 and Grand Marais in 2019

In recent summers, a number of local residents and business owners in Grand Marais complained about the smell from the city’s wastewater treatment plant. Some were concerned that the odor sours things for visitors to what has been billed as the “Coolest Small Town in America.”

The smell has returned in July 2019. In addition to the unpleasant odor, the proximity of the stench to Lake Superior raises a number of environmental questions and concerns.
