In the final weeks of 2017, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry announced it would likely move a number of caribou from Michipicoten Island to the Slate Island, which are both located on Lake Superior in Ontario.
The population of caribou on Michipicoten Island is being wiped out by wolves, as reported recently here on WTIP. However, there are some, including band members from the Michipicoten First Nation who feel the MNRF’s efforts are not happening fast enough or with a required sense of urgency.
Leo Lepiano is the lands and resources coordinator for the Michipicoten First Nation. He spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about this situation.
