Expansion of ski hill leads to call for public meeting on treaty rights
Cook County Commissioner Bobby Deschampe said he would like a public meeting to be held as an opportunity to educate the public about the 1854 Treaty and treaty rights for members of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The idea for a public discussion about treaty rights came up during a meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, May 8. The board was discussing drafting a letter of support for the local ski resort Lutsen Mountains as they continue their push for an interim-use permit to expand the resort onto federal land.
After discussing a possible format for the public meeting to share information about the 1854 Treaty, Deschampe said he would talk with other individuals to coordinate a possible time, date and location for the meeting.
Regarding the Treaty of 1854, in October 2017 WTIP shared an update about a new document created to explain the treaty rights in a clear and comprehensive manner.
