It’s busy times at the Grand Marais/Cook County Airport. A recently expanded paved runway can now accommodate charter planes carrying up to 30 passengers. In addition, the Isle Royale seaplane service had a very busy summer in 2019 as their season winds down.

Cook County’s volunteer aviation group, The Arrowhead Eagles, will be holding their annual fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast Saturday, Sept. 21 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the local airport. The event will showcase some of the new features at the airport, which is located at 123 Airport Road above Devil Track Lake.

Proceeds from the event help to fund the Arrowhead Eagles’ mission to support Cook County airport and aviation tradition. The Arrowhead Eagles do this through promoting aviation events, airport enhancements, youth-oriented activities and opportunities, encouraging community use and a friendly atmosphere at the Cook County/Grand Marais airport.

In 2020 the Arrowhead Eagles will start a small scholarship program for local students with an interest in aviation.  The Cook County/Grand Marais EDA is a partner in the start-up of the scholarship program.

At the event Sept. 21, aircraft will be on display and free airplane rides will be available with the purchase of a pancake breakfast. Breakfast is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12 years of age.

WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with Airport Manager Rodney Roy and chair of the Arrowhead Eagles group Mike Raymond about the recent happenings at the local airport.
