A visit to the North Shore meant a busy day for District 3A Representative Rob Ecklund on July 23.

Included in his trip was a visit to Isle Royale National Park, where the Lake Superior island officially received “Traditional Cultural Property” status, a federal designation that recognizes that Isle Royale is the ancestral home of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

Also Tuesday, Ecklund hosted a town hall event at the Cook County Community Center in Grand Marais. A crowd of approximately 50 people attended the event, with Ecklund sharing a summary of recent legislative accomplishments and taking questions from the audience. Topics discussed included the proposed Border to Border Touring Route across northern Minnesota, of which Ecklund was the bill’s chief author. Also discussed were the status and future of copper-nickel mining in northeastern Minnesota, funding for the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, climate change, gun control, female reproductive rights and the political climate on both a state and national level.

Ecklund stopped by WTIP July 24 and spoke with News Director Joe Friedrichs about his visit to the North Shore.
