Here in Cook County, fishing is often serious business. From charter trips on Lake Superior to weeklong adventures in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, many anglers travel north to pursue their dreams of catching fish in Minnesota.

However, according to recent information shared by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, fewer people are buying fishing licenses in the land of 10,000 lakes.

The DNR says the number of licenses sold so far this year is down about 41,000 from the same time last year, and are the second-lowest fishing license sales number for this period in approximately two decades.

Jenifer Wical is the marketing coordinator for the DNR’s Fish & Wildlife Division. She spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about the decline in fishing-license sales.
