Capturing the community’s attention and dominating social media threads, a deer stranded on ice in the Grand Marais Harbor near Artist Point made for an abundance of spirited conversation to start the new year.

Following a flood of calls to the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, local Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers responded to the scene Sunday, Jan. 3. Among the responding officers was Mary Manning. She spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about safely assisting the deer back to the mainland.

It was also a busy weekend in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Ice fishing opened New Year’s Day for trout species on inland lakes located entirely within the BWCA. Warm weather and the holiday weekend made for a busy scene on some of the lakes along the Gunflint Trail that are located entirely within the wilderness boundary.

In addition to rescuing the deer, Manning also worked in the BWCA checking ice anglers and shares an update in the WTIP interview. The audio posted below is the full interview.
