Devil Track home destroyed by fire

Update October 15, 4:30 p.m. - The Cook County Sheriff's Office has provided more details on the fire that destroyed a home on Sunday.
On Oct. 14 at 5:15 a.m., the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Marais Fire Department and First Responders, Maple Hill Fire Department and STOP Team, along with the Lutsen Fire Department, responded to a structure fire at 1120 Devil Track Road.

The fire was reported by a neighbor who stated they awoke to a loud noise and could see a red glow coming from behind the home, believed to be near where the propane tank is located. Responders were en route at 5:18 a.m., and on the scene at 5:27 a.m., at which time the home and attached garage containing two vehicles were fully engulfed in flames.

The homeowner, Thelma Hedstrom, along with daughter Jean and husband who were staying at the home, were able to escape without injury. The homeowner was driven to hospital by private vehicle for evaluation as a precaution and was released.
 
The Minnesota Duty Officer and State Fire Marshal were called. The cause and origin of the fire are unclear at this time; the Fire Marshal’s Office is completing an investigation.

Just after 5 a.m. on Sunday, October 14, Cook County Law Enforcement issued a page for multiple fire departments to respond to a house fire on Devil Track Road in Grand Marais. A neighbor had called in a report of a fire at 1120 Devil Track Road. 

Despite the response of several fire departments, the home of Thelma Hedstrom was completely destroyed by fire. The occupants were able to get out of the house and no one was injured.
