Local government leaders meet periodically in a joint powers session. Taking part are representatives of Cook County, the City of Grand Marais, School District 166, and the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The meetings are to discuss matters of mutual concern and to consider ways the various entities can work together.
At the last such meeting, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribal Chair Bobby Deschampe brought up the subject of racism, sharing some heartfelt thoughts on what it is like to be discriminated against, in large ways and small.
Cook County's Human Resources Director Pam Dixon and Extension Director Diane Booth wanted to follow up on Chair Deschampe's comments. They invited John Morrin, of the Grand Portage Tribal Council and an instructor with The Peoples' Institute for Survival and Beyond, to give a presentation.
The presentation, titled An Introduction to Understanding Racism, is scheduled for Thursday, November 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. It is open to the public via Zoom. Click here for the link to join the presentation.
