Discussion continues at both the local and state level regarding a memo dated May 21 from the Minnesota Department of Revenue regarding the classification for taxation of short-term rentals.

According to the memo, most short-term rentals in Minnesota should be classified as 3a commercial properties, a move that could substantially increase the amount of property taxes owners and operators would pay.

County Administrator Jeff Cadwell told WTIP the specifics of what the Department of Revenue directive means for Cook County remains somewhat unclear. Cadwell spoke about this with WTIP News Director Joe Friedrichs, as well as several other topics related to county taxes and information about the county board.
