Traditions of sustainable living on the land are practiced according to the season by the people of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. A tradition of Ziigwan, or spring, is going to the sugar bush on the hills above the lake to tap the maple trees for the sweet syrup they bring to the people. Grand Portage State Park Naturalist Anna Deschampe tells us about the traditions of Anishinaabe sap gathering and provides a tour of the sounds of Ziigwan in the sugar camp.
