Despite some mental errors and missed cues, the Cook County Vikings won their Section 7-A volleyball playoff opener last night to set them up with a showdown with the Silver Bay Mariners.

The now 19 and 2 Vikes dropped Duluth Marshall’s record to 10-18 and 1 for the year by stopping the Hilltoppers on three identical set scores of 25 to 19. The win moves the Vikings into a 6 PM game tomorrow night against the Mariners in Hermantown. Cook County is seeded one in the South Subsection while Silver Bay is seeded number five.

Silver Bay took it to the Cromwell last night winning 4 to 1 over the number four seeded Cardinals. The win put the Mariners at 11 and 10 for the season going into tomorrow night’s game with Cook County.

In taking their win over Marshall, the Vikings had to overcome the perfect serving of Maddie Schenk. The Hilltopper had 12 service aces  against Cook County. Signe Braafladt had 22 digs for Marshall while Sydney Adams had six kills, two assists, 10 digs and two blocks.

Bekah Laky had 17 aces and 23 digs for the Vikings while Ali Iverson had seven kills and 14 digs. Anna Carman had 16 digs while CeCe Olson had 14 digs and Ashley Deschampe had 13 kills.

The Cook County-Silver Bay game will be broadcast on WTIP starting at 5:45 Friday evening. Bob Carter and Kelly Roberts will be in Hermantown to give you the pre-game information followed by all the action starting with the first serve at 6.
