Volleyball Vikings advance, football team ends season
The Cook County Vikings volleyball team is set for a showdown at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening with Cherry in the semi-final round of the Class 7-A playoffs at Duluth Denfeld.
Cook County advanced by defeating Silver Bay 3 to 0 on scores of 25 to 19, 25 to 13 and 25 to 16.
Ashley Deschampe led the Vikes with 14 kills and 15 digs while Theresa Morrin had 16 digs. Bekah Laky had 14 service aces and Ali Iverson had seven kills to help Cook County seal the win.
Taylor Guzzo had 12 service aces and Shay Viola had five kills and six digs for Silver Bay.
The winner of the Viking-Tiger match faces the winner of the second game Wednesday night at Denfeld. That match features 21 and 5 South Range against 18 and 8 North Woods.
In football, The 2011 season came to an end for the Vikings on Saturday in Deer River. Cook County played hard throughout the playoff game but the Warriors overcame the Vikings’ strong effort by the score of 41 to 31.
And in other North Shore football playoffs, Silver Bay took an impressive 25 to 8 win at home against Floodwood in the semi-finals of Section 5 nine-man competition. The win put the Mariners at 8 and 2 for the season.
They travel to McGregor on Friday for the Section 5 championship game against the 9 and 1 Mercuries.
