While residents of Duluth and tourists to the Twin Ports await the arrival of nine Tall Ships on Wednesday, July 28, people along the upper North Shore have been straining to catch sight of at least one of the big sailing ships.
According to the official website of the Great Lakes United Tall Ships Challenge 2010, the Pride of Baltimore II was off the coast of Isle Royale Monday morning and heading down the shore to Duluth. The reconstructed 1812-era clipper privateer is the only ship scheduled to be in the immediate Cook and Lake County area.
The nine ships are part of the Tall Ships Challenge race that features two dozen sailing ships from the US, Canada and Europe. Ships race through all of the Great Lakes and touch port several times. The Duluth Tall Ships Festival opens with a parade and other activities on Thursday July 29 and runs through August 3.
Ships leaving Duluth will next visit Green Bay, WI. The Great Lakes Challenge is focused on raising awareness of the Great Lakes ecology.
