January and February is the time of year gray wolves mate in Cook County. According to Grand Marais veterinarian Kim Paplham, this is also when dog owners should exercise caution outside.

Put a bell on the dog’s collar when you go for a walk and keep him close to you. If the dog doesn’t generally come when you call, put her on a leash. When walking a woodland trail, talk to your dog and create noise – anything to make your human presence known.

If you let the dog out before bedtime -- go out as well. An unwatched, untended pet out of doors during the mating season increases the chances of having a run-in with wolves.
