Registration Ends Friday for Small-Scale Gardening Class!

Gardening has changed over the years. Growing food used to be our main objective, but there's been a resurgence of gardening on a smaller scale. Fairy gardens, shell gardens, Bonsai, tabletop fountains, terrariums and train gardens are becoming more popular across Minnesota.
 
The U of M Extension Master Gardeners are offering the following programs on Saturday, June 7, for both adults and children 10 years and older.  Please register by Friday, May 30 by calling the Cook County Extension office at 218-387-3015.

--Betty Jensen makes miniature and fairy gardens and she will be speaking from 9 – 10 a.m. about how to design these miniature gardens. She will have examples and lead you on a step-by-step demonstration. If you want to make one of these gardens for yourself, take one of her afternoon classes where you can make-and-take home your own miniature garden. Bring your child or grandchild and share the fun of making your very own fairy garden!
 
--‘Bonsai Basics’ with Dave Severson. Dave is known as the ‘bonsai guy’ from Duluth and if you want to learn more about bonsai trees, you can take an afternoon workshop with Dave and take home your own bonsai tree. This is a fabulous way to share gardening with an older person who loves to garden but maybe is unable to care for large flower or vegetable beds anymore.
 
--Jan Schreier is a gardening enthusiast who loves water gardening but has learned how to landscape around her husband’s outdoor trains. She will tell you about hardy miniature plants you can grow outdoors in Minnesota during the 11:30 a.m.– 12:30 p.m. morning session. In the afternoon, Jan will be teaching a free class on how to build a table top fountain.
 
--Mark Schreier is a model railroad garden enthusiast! You can take an afternoon class from Mark and learn how to develop an outdoor train garden and build railroad furniture.
 
--Emma Bradley, Cook County Master Gardener, will be teaching a make-and-take class on a moss and rock garden. Since we live in such a wonderful area, using some of these natural materials to bring indoors will simply add depth and flavor to your landscape.
 
Whatever small scale gardening classes you attend, you will enjoy a great box lunch and refreshments while sharing the wonder of small scale gardening with fellow gardening enthusiasts. To pre-register, please call the Cook County Extension office at 218-387-3015.

Classes will be held at the Cook County Community Center, 317 W. 5th Street, Grand Marais.
