The Grand Marais City Council met in a continued session on Friday, Nov. 12 to accept the bid of B.M.A. Construction to make repairs to the municipal pool. The late October windstorm damaged the pool building’s roof and interior walls.
At their Wednesday, Nov. 10 meeting the council agreed they needed to go ahead with repair to the pool, the sticking point was the over a large difference in the two bids the city had received. Because the pool repair is considered a special emergency, the city does not have to go through the usual competitive bidding process.
The Mayor and council members could not make an “apples to apples” comparison on Nov. 10 between the B.M.A. and Isak Hanson bids, so continued the meeting until they could get further clarification. According to City Administrator Mike Roth, the issues were cleared up sufficiently at Friday’s meeting to award the bid for $88,200 to B.M.A. Insurance will cover the cost less the $10,000 deductable. The contractor estimates at least a month to complete the job, weather depending.
