Michigan’s Portage Lake Lift Bridge gets stuck

On Wedensday, Aug. 4 at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon the lift bridge between Houghton and Hancock, Michigan got stuck in the up position. An operator from the Houghton Police Department said emergency measures are in place and crews are working to fix the problem. With the lift bridge stuck, cars and pedestrians have no way to travel from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the Keweenaw Peninsula.
UPDATE--Aug. 5, 12:27 p.m. Crews were able to lower the bridge and traffic is flowing. MDOT officials from Lansing are enroute and will be inspecting the bridge later today. MDOT wants to warn motorists who use the bridge, MDOT will be lifting the bridge again Thursday evening and further delays are possible.
