GRAND MARAIS AREA

Our fishing expert, Jon Muhich of Buck’s Hardware, says this past weekend the Trout Derby was held at Gunflint Lake and around two hundred people participated but there was a total of just seven fish caught. The winner was Brian Schroeder with a seven pounder. Congratulations Brian!

Fishing has slowed considerably. Birch Lake is one place you can try. Jigs and/or spoons tipped with a minnow might get those LAKERS to bite. Head down deep though, 45 to 60 feet. Duncan Lake might show you some fish in the 35 to 50 feet or so. Again try spoons tipped with minnows. Moss Lake is one more you can try in that same depth, 35 to 50 feet.

You can head up to Kimball with small spoons and waxies and fish in 12 to 20 feet of water. Or you can go to Mink and try in about the same depth. Esther Lake reported a little action as well using ice jigs and waxies in about 20 feet of water.

That’s all we have for you until May when we look ahead to the opener. According to one fisherman he and a friend spent a whole day changing depths and searching for some action from about 30 to 60 feet and came up empty. That's slow and that’s why they call it fishin’ and not catchin’.
