According to our fishing expert Jon Muhich of Buck’s Hardware, fishing is what we should be doing during Fisherman’s Picnic.

GRAND MARAIS AREA

Walleyes are hitting crawlers during the day in 18 to 30 feet at Lake Saganaga and Seagull Lake and in 20 feet at Hungry Jack. During the evening hours slip bobbers and leeches are working best in shallower water.

Smallmouth bass are hitting live bait and spinners in five to 30 feet on Northern Lights Lake and Poplar Lake.

Look for lake trout suspended at 50 to 60 feet on Saganaga and Greenwood.

Brook trout are hitting flies at Lost Lake and rainbow trout are taking crawlers at Moss Lake in 12 to 18 feet, Kimball Lake in 23 feet, and at Esther Lake in 15 to 18 feet.

On Lake Superior, salmon are suspended at 20 feet over 40 feet and lake trout are slightly deeper - both are hitting watermelon-colored spoons.
