Local firefighters get federal grant

Members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation have announced that 21 communities across the state will receive $1,444,938 as part of The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.  The AFG program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and is a component of the larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards.

One of the largest grants will go to the Tofte Fire Department for $156,988.

Senator Amy Klobuchar said the funding will provide local firefighters with the critical equipment and training they need to respond to community emergencies. Senator Al Franken added that in tough economic times, it’s crucial that government not drop the ball on critical services like funding for first responders. Eighth District Congressman Jim Oberstar agreed, saying the program ensures first responders have the tools and training they need to protect their communities.

The AFG Program will provide critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
