Isle Royale to Hold Public Meetings on Cultural Resources Plan

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Officials are kicking off a series of public meetings this week to discuss a plan for dealing with cultural resources at Isle Royale National Park.
The first public meeting is Tuesday, November 12 in Houghton, Michigan. Others will be held in Chelsea, Michigan on Thursday, November 14, in St. Paul on Tuesday, November 19, and Duluth on Wednesday, November 20.
Isle Royale is an island chain in northwestern Lake Superior. Its cultural features range from prehistoric Native American mining remnants to lighthouses, shipwrecks and fishery sites. Officials say they illustrate how people shaped the landscape over thousands of years.
During the meetings, the planning team will present information about preliminary draft alternative concepts of the Cultural Resources Management Plan (CRMP) that provide a range of options for the management, treatment, and interpretation of cultural resources. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity for the public to discuss the alternative concepts, as well as other ideas about the plan and planning process with the planning team.
“Isle Royale has such interesting and varied cultural resources and associated compelling stories. We are very excited to be working on this plan,” commented Park Superintendent, Phyllis Green. “I hope the public takes this opportunity to engage with the planning team and let us know how they would like see cultural resources managed in the future.”
Park staffers produced the plan in consultation with tribal and state governments and other interested parties. It deals with general management, preservation, public use and interpretation of cultural resources. It's accompanied by an environmental impact statement.
