The detour on Hwy 1 south of Ely will remain in place until Tuesday, Jan. 3. The detour was scheduled to be lifted sometime during this week, however, the excavation near Spring Lake is taking longer than expected.

Crews are removing poor soil and muck beneath Highway 1 during the closure. This work is in preparation for a project to reconstruct a five-mile section of Hwy 1 during the 2012 construction season.

Hwy 1 is closed between Forest Road 424/New Tomahawk Road and just north of Forest Road 553. Motorists are required to follow the posted detour.
