The new visitor center at Grand Portage State Park is nearing completion, and the park will be closed temporarily while the new entrance roads and trails are paved. Paving starts Wednesday, June 16, and should be completed by Friday, June 18. The park is expected to be open this weekend, but visitors are advised to call ahead or check the DNR website for updates.
The new 5,800-square-foot visitor center, which will double as a Minnesota Department of Transportation highway rest area, will open this summer. It will be fully accessible and include travel information as well as an exhibit hall showcasing the culture and traditions of the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe, on whose land the park is located.
While construction is underway, occasional park closures may continue to be necessary to ensure visitor safety. Those planning a weekday trip to Grand Portage State Park are advised to go to www.mndnr.gov/parksandtrails and check the Grand Portage State Park page to confirm when the park will be open, or call the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or toll free 888-646-6367 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
To visit Grand Portage State Park, travel east from the town of Grand Marais, Minnesota, on State Highway 61 for about 36 miles to the Canadian Border. The park entrance is on the west side of the highway, just before you come to the U.S. Customs Station on the US/Canada border.
