Shortly after 9 a.m. on Monday, Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers convened the Cook County Canvass Board to certify the November 4 election results. After checking the voting machine tapes, the board verified there was a tie in Commissioner District One between Frank Moe and Kristin DeArruda Wharton.

Powers explained the tie would be broken by lot, in this case by drawing a red or blue cube from a bag. The red cube would be the winner. Moe and Wharton drew and Moe was declared the winner.

Wharton immediately petitioned in writing for a recount. After the board finished certifying all the election results, members of the Auditor’s office began the recount, which has been completed and confirms the decision.
