The Cook County Vikings open Section 7-A football and volleyball playoffs this week with action at home in Grand Marais.

Tomorrow night at 6 o’clock, the 6 and 1 Vikings football team hosts the Mesabi East Giants at Lyle Anderson Field. The Vikings beat the 2 and 5 Giants 39 to 6 on September 16th at Aurora.

The playoff opener will be broadcast live on WTIP with Norman Moe and Dick Dorr starting with a pre-game show about 5:45 followed by the kickoff. Weather permitting, WTIP and Boreal are planning to provide live video-stream of the game with the WTIP broadcast team providing the audio.

The winner of the Viking-Giant game plays the winner of the East Central-Deer River matchup at 2 PM on Saturday. Home field advantage for that game will go to the higher seed. Cook County is seeded number three and Mesabi East is number six while Deer River is number two and East Central number seven.

At 7 o’clock Wednesday night, the 18 and 2 Cook County volleyball team hosts a second round match in the Section 7-A playoffs. The Vikings earned a bye in tonight’s first round action.  The Vikings will host the winner of tonight’s Duluth Marshall-Mesabi East first-round game. The match will be broadcast on WTIP with Bob Carter and Kelly Roberts calling the action. WTIP and Boreal are also planning on a live video web-stream of the match with the WTIP broadcast team providing the audio.

The winner of Wednesday night’s volleyball playoff will play the winner of the Cromwell match against either Silver Bay or Fond du Lac at 6 PM, Friday in Hermantown. Silver Bay and Fond du Lac play in tonight’s first round with the winner meeting Cromwell on Wednesday at 7 PM.

Vikings’ season passes are not valid for these Minnesota State High School League games and tickets will be available at the gate.
