Dry conditions and high winds are causing problems for forest firefighters in Northwestern Ontario. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, more than 130 fires are currently burning – 25 started over this past weekend.

The MNR reports hot, dry conditions and high winds in the area continue. Recent rainfall brought little moisture along with the threat of lightning.

There are 489 firefighters currently battling the blazes, supported by 100 administrative staff. Meanwhile over 1,000 residents of remote communities are still displaced due to the fires.
