Filing closes for candidates facing primary election

Tuesday was the last day to file for county offices. The 2010 Primary Election will be held Tuesday, August 10. While seven county offices are up for election, only candidates for Commissioner Districts 3 and 5 will face off in the primary.

 

In District 3, eight candidates have filed. Incumbent Bob Fenwick is being challenged by Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes, City Councilor Kay Costello, Planning Commission member Lloyd Speck as well as Keith Kuckler, Cathi Williams, James Smith and Garry Gamble. District 5 incumbent Bruce Martinson is being challenged by Tofte Town Board Chair Paul James and Lutsen Town Supervisor Diane Parker.

 

Incumbent Janice Hall has filed in District 1 as has former County Attorney Bill Hennessy. They will face each other in the November General Election. County Recorder Dusty Nelms, Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers, County Attorney Tim Scannell and Sheriff Mark Falk all go into the General Election unopposed.

 

Having filed for election means a candidate’s name will appear on the ballot, however write-in’s for any office are legal.

 

Also, James Hall has filed for reelection to Soil and Water District 2, incumbent David Berglund has filed for District 4 and incumbent Roger Haertel has filed for District 5

 

School district ISD166, the hospital and the City of Grand Marais do not participate in primaries – filing dates for those offices is August 3 through 17.
