EDA to appoint golf course management board

The Cook County-Grand Marais Joint Economic Development Authority (EDA) voted at its October meeting to create a new management board to run Superior National Golf Course at Lutsen.  EDA board Chair Mike Littfin brought the idea to the board.
 

"I believe that from a county standpoint, everybody is looking for some sort of, either, I don’t want to say change, but some sort of structure that has accountability and new people involved," said Littfin.  "The motion I have is that the EDA appoint a board of directors, enabling them with the powers necessary to manage all aspects of the golf course operations to the fullest extent of the law in accordance with EDA statutes.” 

 

Littfin's motion passed unanimously and a public notice calling for applicants has appeared in the Cook County News Herald.  The five-member management board will include one county commissioner, one EDA board member, one member of the Friends of Superior National, and two members of the public at large who have “extensive business backgrounds.”  County residents interested in serving on the golf course management board should send a letter of interest to the Cook County/Grand Marais EDA at P.O Box 597, Grand Marais. Letters can also be hand delivered to city hall in downtown Grand Marais.  The application period closes Friday, October 29^th.  The following Monday, November 1^st at 9:00 a.m., the EDA will hold a special meeting at city hall to discuss the selection of the board.

 

There has been a series of proposals to bail out Superior National, which by all accounts has deteriorated in recent years due to declining revenue, fewer marketing dollars, and lack of reinvestment.  The county board has so far rejected these proposals and is in the process of hiring a golf course consultant to advise them.
