Dr. Gerald Niemi on linkage between landscapes and coastal ecosystems

More than 600 freshwater scientists from around the world are in Duluth this week for a conference called “Big lakes, Big world.” It’s the 54th International Conference on Great Lakes Research, being held in Duluth for the first time.  Dr. Gerald Niemi is a senior research associate at UMD's Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) and a biology professor at UMD, and he's presenting at the conference. 
In this interview, recorded during WTIP's A.M. Community Calendar program, Dr. Niemi talks with WTIP volunteer Ann Possis about the impacts of off-shore activities on Lake Superior's coastal ecosystems, the significance of an increased population along the North Shore and how to best reduce erosion along the lake.
