Cool, wet weather helps in fight of Pagami Creek Fire

Firefighters in northern Minnesota continue to battle a wildfire that started in August in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and continues to burn over nearly 145 square miles.

The fire information office reports Sunday that the Pagami Creek fire is 80 percent contained and cooler, wet weather over the weekend helped firefighters make progress.

However, fire restrictions remain in effect throughout the state. No campfires are allowed except in designated campgrounds. Campfires are restricted in the entire BWCA.

On Sunday, fire crews were removing unneeded equipment, mopping up sport fires and improving existing fire lines.

The Superior National Forest has recently expanded closures for areas near the fire as a precautionary measure. An updated list of closures is on the Superior National Forest's web site.
