Sunday, July 17th is Lake Superior Day and the Lake Superior Binational Forum is inviting communities around the lake to schedule events that celebrate the life of the lake.

Lake Superior Day was started in the early 1990s to highlight the importance of this great water body to the basin’s environment and economy.  The Forum promotes this day around the basin to highlight the special connections people have to this unique world treasure.

The Forum's website offers ideas about how the day was celebrated last year and what communities, families, and individuals can do to celebrate at superiorforum.org.  New information is posted regularly.

Last year over 50 groups and communities participated by offering activities such as dragon boat races, beach clean ups, musical concerts, library displays, church services, and signed proclamations that designate the third Sunday in July as Lake Superior Day.
The Forum will promote events and activities on its web calendar at no cost.

Ideas include:

♦ Artists can set up a display of artwork at a community location such as a museum, community center, or library.

♦ Families can fly a kite and pick up litter at a favorite beach or park.

♦ Become Lake Superior Steward (find out how at www.superiorforum.info)

♦ Borrow a free DVD about the lake and its natural environment and economy to show at an event or group meeting.
Email [email protected] to receive a copy of the movie list.

♦ Go jump in the lake! and snorkel, kayak, paddle, dive, splash.

♦ Schedule a local speaker to come to the local library, church, or group meeting to talk about a local topic such as history,
shipwrecks, culture, art, or natural history.

♦ Hold a special service at your local worship site—check out the webisite (www.superiorforum.info) for lots of ideas!

♦ Sponsor a beach cleanup.

♦ Download and distribute Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers brochures.

♦ Buy a book or DVD about Lake Superior or check the local library for free materials.
