The filing period for city and ISD166 school board positions is Aug.3 through 17—and both fields may see a larger that usual number of candidates. Neither the school nor city participates in the Primary Election on Aug.10.
This year, the mayoral seat and two four-year city council seats are up for election. Mayor Sue Hakes and City Councilor Kay Costello are not eligible to file for re-election with the city because both are running for 3rd District county commissioner. Costello’s seat and that of fellow council member Bill Lenz are in play this election. Councilors do not represent districts and run city-wide.
Three positions are open for ISD166. Incumbents are Mary Sanders, District 3, Eric Kemp, District 1 and Bill Huggins, District 5. The school board has voted to proceed with an operating referendum this fall, which is certain to generate community interest. The board earlier voted down moving to a 4-day school week schedule.
Three North Shore Hospital and Care Center board positions are also open in Districts 1, 3 and 5 – incumbents are Sharon Bloomquist, Howard Abrahamson and Tom Spence, Sr. The Hospital Board is in the process of hiring an administrator in a new arrangement with St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.
Filing for city offices is at City Hall weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. School and hospital filings are at the Cook County Courthouse during regular business hours.
