Campfire restrictions went into effect on Monday throughout the Superior National Forest. According to Gunflint District Ranger Dennis Neitzke, open campfires are not allowed in the forest including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Campfire restrictions typically include open fires  in dispersed areas. Fires are allowed in steel fire rings at designated campgrounds or at residences. Use of gas or propane stoves is allowed.

Neitzke said the decision to ban campfires was arrived at in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.
