Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer, but it is also a time of remembrance. There are a few activities planned in recognition of the men and women of the military who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Cook County Historical Society has opened its special exhibit: On the Line: a Military History of Cook County. The Historical Society Museum, at 8 South Broadway, will be open through the weekend, Friday through Sunday, May 26 - 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Memorial Day, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The historical society invites the public to come see its new exhibit which covers 150 years of Cook County’s involvement in military conflicts.

The exhibit was funded in large part by three local veteran organizations:

American Legion Post 413, the Sons of the Legion, and the Post 413 Legion Auxiliary. Each of these groups gave a donation to help the exhibit come to fruition.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held on the lawn of the Cook County courthouse at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29. American Legion Post 413 conducts this ceremony.

Following the service, at about 11:30 a.m., a luncheon will be held for veterans, friends and family members at Grandma Ray’s in Grand Marais. The luncheon is hosted by the Legion Auxiliary and there is no charge for veterans at the luncheon.

Rhonda Silence learns more about these events in this interview.
