Commissioner Frank Moe resigns from county board

Following a grueling meeting focused on the 2017 budget, and shortly after the levy was set at 11.21 percent, Cook County Commissioner Frank Moe abruptly resigned from the county board.

“I regrettably am informing the board and my constituents that I will be resigning my seat on the county board,” Moe said. “There are a few reasons in my decision, primarily I have a health situation that is in needing of my attention. And I will not be able to fulfill my obligation to the county board and to those I represent.”

Cook County Auditor-Treasurer Braidy Powers said there will likely need to be a special election to fill Moe’s vacant seat. Moe said he will do his best to fulfill the duties of his seat on the county board until a new commissioner is elected.

Moe was elected in 2014 to represent the east end of Cook County, which includes Grand Portage, Hovland and Colvill. During the 2014 election, a tie occurred between Moe and his challenger in the race, Kristin DeArruda Wharton, for the 1st District commissioner seat. Each candidate recived 246 votes in the election. Ultimately, the race was decided by drawing wooden blocks from a cloth bag. Moe drew the red block, which meant he won the seat. 

A date for the special election for a commissioner to represent District 1 will be announced soon.
