At the end of the election filing period for the city of Grand Marais on Tuesday, August 11, there were five candidates vying for two city council seats. Since then, one candidate, Tracy Benson, has withdrawn from the race.

Benson, who once served on the city council, told Grand Marais City Hall that she was withdrawing from the race because of possible conflict with her work.

That leaves four people in the race--incumbent Craig Schulte, Michael Garry, Diane Greeley, and Mike Smieja. The top two vote getters take the council seats.

Also on the ballot for city residents in the upcoming general election is the race for mayor. Incumbent mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux has filed for reelection. Also running for the mayoral seat is current City Councilor Kelly Swearingen.
