Starting Monday, June 1, a number of campground located on the Superior National Forest in Cook County will open to overnight camping. This is in alignment with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s announcement that allows campgrounds to reopen starting June 1 under the ‘Stay Safe MN’ order.

A number of these campgrounds are located up the Gunflint Trail, with others along remote forest roads in the county and others near or at the end of the Sawbill Trail. Below are the campgrounds opening in the immediate WTIP listening area that will be opening June 1:

-- Trail’s End Campground
-- Sawbill Campground
-- Crescent Lake Campground
-- Temperance River Campground
-- East Bearskin Campground
-- Flour Lake Campground
-- Iron Lake Campground

On Monday, May 18, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness reopened for both day and overnight use.

This move by the U.S. Forest Service was in step with Gov. Walz, who announced earlier this month he would let the state’s stay-at-home order expire May 18.
