Lake County is getting a new newspaper in 2022.

The Lake County Press will be based in Two Harbors. It will launch on Jan. 21. The owner of the newspaper will be CherryRoad Media, a New Jersey based company that is also the owner of the Cook County News-Herald in Grand Marais.

Lake County journalist Forrest Johnson will be the editor of the Lake County Press. Among the staff writers for the newspaper will be Kitty Mayo, a writer and journalist who lives in the North Shore area.

The newspaper will have an office in Two Harbors. The paper will cover local news from Lake County, including happenings in Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Finland. Print editions will come out every Saturday, with both print and online subscriptions available.

The addition of the Lake County Press to the CherryRoad Media holdings expands the growing collection of newspapers the company owns. In addition to the News-Herald, the company recently purchased newspapers in Granite Falls, Cottonwood, Crookston, Montevideo, St. James, Redwood Falls and it started a newspaper in International Falls.

Silver Bay's Northshore Journal has been the only newspaper in Lake County for more than a year. The Lake County Chronicle folded in May 2020, with the publisher of the now closed operation noting declining subscribers and decreasing advertising revenue as the reason for the paper’s demise.

Prior to the newspaper launch in 2022, Johnson spoke with WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs about the new media enterprise coming to Two Harbors.
