1854 Treaty Authority releases informative document on treaty rights

According to a new document published by the 1854 Treaty Authority, since the 1970s, tribes have been successfully reasserting hunting, fishing and gathering rights in the ceded territories of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan in both federal and state courts.

The 1854 Treaty Authority implements the off-reservation hunting, fishing and gathering rights of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in the 5 1/2 million acres under the Treaty of 1854.

In this interview, WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs talks with Sonny Myers, the executive director of the 1854 Treaty Authority, about the new document created to explain the treaty rights in a clear and comprehensive manner.
