Mayor shares thoughts on conditional use permits

The Grand Marais City Council held its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 14, and there were a number of planning commission items on the agenda.

The city considered two conditional use permits and one variance. One conditional use permit is for the use of the former Cavallin Funeral Home as a lodging and retail business. Another CUP request was from Mike and Matt Groth who propose construction of 10 apartments in three structures on their property in Grand Marais near the bottom of the new Gunflint Trail.

The city also continued discussion of whether or not lodging is – or should be – allowed on the first floor of the downtown area of the city.

Also on the agenda was another look at the downtown flooding model.

After the meeting, Grand Marais Mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux stopped in to talk about these matters. Here’s Rhonda Silence with more.
