Last school board meeting for Chris Goettl

The first School District 166 board meeting of 2019 will be the first for newly elected board member Rena Rogers. 
 

Rogers was one of the few members of the public in attendance at the December school board meeting—the last meeting of 2018—and the last meeting for School Board Member Chris Goettl, who chose not to run for reelection in District 3, opening the way for Rogers to be elected.

Before saying goodbye, the school board did conduct regular business, which included discussion of the school district projects funded by the voter-approved levy, such as the renovated science area and expanded culinary arts area. 
 

In addition to the questions about the finances, Board Member Deb White questioned the safety of the design of the culinary arts area, which has a large glass wall looking into the school hallway. 
 

White noted that schools across the country are removing glass walls over concerns about school shootings. Superintendent Bill Crandall said there are measures that can be taken to make the glass wall safer, such as a special film coating. 
 

No decisions were made regarding changes to the glass wall in the new culinary arts area. 
 

Finally, as the school board wrapped up its review of the school audit and budget discussion, Board Chair Sissy Lunde asked her colleagues to think about their goals for the coming year. 
 

The first meeting of the year for School District 166 is Thursday, January 3, starting with the annual organizational meeting at 5 p.m., followed by the regular meeting. The meeting will be held in the Jane Mianowski Conference Room in the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
